Here it is… I shared a picture of this happy accident across social media last week and several of you asked for the recipe.  I was hesitant to dive right back into one of these babies so soon since my pants are getting a tad bit tighter.  However, we have been doing a ton of hiking and biking lately.  I suppose that justifies having a second caramel apple dessert pizza in the house.

We are soaking up all that Virginia has to offer when it comes to outdoorsy stuff.  I fear that we’ll be heading back to Texas once the hubs is finished with his school.  Anyway, no need to dwell on the negative.  Let’s talk about this heavenly dessert pizza!

Dessert pizza is saved for a rare treat since it can be calorie overkill. This one, in particular, reminds me of a caramel apple pie.  Apples and caramel are meant for each other!  Each bite is loaded with tender apples, cinnamon crumble, rich creamy caramel, and sweet puffy crust.  It’s so addicting!

If you like caramel apples and apple pies then this dessert pizza is right up your alley.  Which, I can’t recall ever meeting someone who doesn’t like apple pie.  It’s an American classic!

This recipe has several layers which can seem daunting but don’t fret.  The steps for each layer are fairly easy.  Slice the apples thin so they’ll only take 15 minutes to soften on the stove top.

I used my homemade pizza crust recipe with the dessert pizza variation which uses cake flour.  The cake flour leaves the crust spongy and airy on the inside and crunchy on the outside.  I could just eat the crust and be happy. 🙂

Stretch the dough out so that it spills over the edge of the pizza pan and then roll the overhang over to form a thick edge.  The edge will puff up during cooking, leaving you with a sweet spongy treat.  Honestly, that’s the best part.

Top with a layer of stewed apples, followed by a cinnamon crumble.  This crumble recipe can be used for all sorts of fruit recipes.  It’s the perfect accompaniment for fruit crisps.

The caramel drizzle will be added after the pizza bakes.  It is a basic caramel sauce made with light brown sugar, butter, and milk.  You could even add a can of sweetened condensed milk for a thicker sauce and use the leftovers as a fruit dip.

Drizzle the warm caramel all over the top of the pizza after removing it from the oven.  The caramel will seep down through the apples and absorb into the crust.

If you prefer not to have caramel soaked crust, just allow the caramel to cool before adding it to the pizza.  As the sauce cools down it will thicken up significantly.

Now it’s time to enjoy a slice of this accidentally amazing dessert pizza.  I say accidentally because I honestly had no idea how it was going to turn out the first time I made this.  Hubs was asking for something sweet and a dessert pizza was the first thing to come to mind since I recently mastered homemade pizza crust.

I didn’t measure anything out the first time around so it was a challenge to recreate it exactly as it was.  But I did and with much success.

Go ahead and give this “special occasion” dessert a try.  All of your guests will want a second slice!

Ingredients

For the caramel drizzle

For the pizza

  • 1/2 recipe homemade pizza dough
  • 5-6 small granny smith apples or other tart variety peeled, cored, sliced thin
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons real maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter

For the topping

  • 1/4 cup cake flour
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar packed
  • 1/4 cup old fashioned oats
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter cut into pieces
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions

For the caramel drizzle

  1. Prepare the homemade caramel sauce according to the recipe instructions. The sauce will thicken significantly as it cools.

Make the pizza

  1. Prepare pizza dough through step 4. Preheat oven to 475ºF.

  2. Toss the apples in lemon juice to prevent browning. In a large saucepan over medium-low heat, melt the butter. Stir in maple syrup and allspice. Add apples to syrup mixture and stir well, making sure to coat the apples well with the syrup. Cook the apples over medium-low heat for about 15 minutes, or just until the apples become tender. Remove from heat and set aside to cool.

  3. Using a slotted spoon, scoop the apples from the pan and spread them over the top of the prepared pizza crust. Make sure to distribute the apples in an even layer.

For the topping

  1. Using a pastry cutter or two knives, combine all of the topping ingredients in a medium mixing bowl. Cut the mixture until it forms coarse crumbs. Spread the topping over the top of the apples.

  2. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese has melted. Rotate halfway through the cooking time. Cool for 5 minutes then, transfer to a cutting board.

  3. Drizzle the sauce all over the pizza. Slice and Serve.

Recipe Notes

Save time by making the caramel sauce a day or two ahead.
